The U.S. economy expanded at a 3.4% annualized rate in the third quarter of 2026, according to the Commerce Department’s advance estimate. Growth accelerated from 2.2% in the second quarter. On a quarter-over-quarter basis, the increase was 0.8%, a different measure from the annualized headline rate.
Investment and spending supported growth
Consumer and government spending, alongside private investment, contributed to the increase. Exports declined while imports rose, partly offsetting those gains. Real final sales to private domestic purchasers—a measure of underlying private demand—grew 4.9%, compared with 4.6% in the previous quarter.
What the figures may mean for investors
The advance estimate points to continued expansion, with investment providing a notable lift. The mix matters: stronger domestic demand can support corporate revenues, while rising imports and softer export contributions may weigh on the headline figure. The estimate is preliminary and can be revised as more complete data arrive.
In a note dated October 29, ING said the 3.4% reading exceeded its cited market consensus of 3.2% and highlighted technology-related investment. ING also pointed to softer momentum in consumer spending late in the quarter and sees a possible cooling in fourth-quarter growth; these are the bank’s assessments, not confirmed outcomes.
What to watch next
Investors will watch revisions to the GDP estimate and subsequent spending and inflation data to judge whether domestic demand remains broad-based. GDP alone does not determine the Federal Reserve’s next rate decision. For the latest U.S. inflation context, read our coverage of September PCE inflation.
