South Korea’s economy expanded 1.0% quarter on quarter in the third quarter of 2026, beating economists’ expectations as semiconductor exports and equipment investment benefited from global demand for artificial-intelligence infrastructure.
Growth accelerates and beats forecasts
The Bank of Korea’s advance estimate, released on October 27, showed real gross domestic product rising 1.0% from the previous quarter, after 0.6% growth in the second quarter. GDP increased 3.4% from a year earlier.
The quarterly result exceeded the 0.7% median forecast in a Reuters poll. Real gross domestic income rose 3.4% quarter on quarter and 18.8% year on year, according to the central bank.
Chips lift exports and investment
Exports increased 2.3% during the quarter as demand strengthened for semiconductors, machinery and electrical equipment. Facilities investment jumped 4.1%, led by semiconductor-manufacturing equipment. A Bank of Korea official estimated that the chip sector generated about half of the quarter’s economic growth.
Private consumption, however, fell 0.2% for its first decline in nearly four years. The divergence suggests that export and investment strength has yet to spread fully into domestic demand.
What it means for markets and investors
The stronger-than-expected reading reinforces South Korea’s position as a major beneficiary of global AI capital spending and may support investor interest in memory-chip producers, equipment suppliers and related supply chains.
That support remains conditional on external demand. A slowdown in capital spending by major technology companies or weaker memory prices could pressure exports and investment. Soft household consumption also remains a key test of whether growth can become more balanced.
