Nasdaq Chief Economist Phil Mackintosh’s October 22, 2026 analysis highlights why rising short interest alone does not establish a bearish market outlook. Hedging and liquidity provision also contribute to short activity.
Daily volume and open positions differ
FINRA distinguishes daily short-sale volume, which records executed transactions, from short interest, which measures outstanding short positions on a specified date. A position can be opened and closed during one session: the sale appears in daily volume without leaving an open position.
Why investors should care
Nasdaq’s research explains that market makers and arbitrageurs may sell short while facilitating customer orders or hedging derivatives. These transactions differ from a directional bet against a company.
Market News perspective
Before treating a high ratio as a sell signal, identify whether it measures transactions or outstanding positions, then check its date and coverage. Off-exchange trading data alone is incomplete. Choosing the right measure improves interpretation; it does not predict the next share-price move.
