Vanguard sees an opportunity in US municipal bonds as tax-equivalent yields approach 8%, according to its 22 October 2026 report.
What does the 8% measure mean?
The study uses 16 October data and an assumed federal tax rate of 40.8%. The figure estimates the taxable yield needed to match tax-exempt income; it is not a cash yield available to every investor.
Municipal yields rose 120 basis points in the third quarter versus 83 for the Bloomberg US Aggregate Index. Vanguard attributes the gap to supply-and-demand pressures.
What investors should watch
MARKET NEWS analysis: Compare after-tax income with credit risk, duration and fees. Higher yields do not prevent price losses if rates rise. An assumed US tax advantage does not automatically apply to investors elsewhere.
